What to look for when buying luxury vinyl flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) can change your mind about vinyl, and it's easy to get caught up in the shockingly large number of colors, patterns, styles, and designs. Don't become distracted. There are certain things you should look out for to make sure you get the best product for your needs.

Choose the right thickness

Vinyl thickness ranges from 2 mm for lower quality to 8 mm-plus for higher quality products. If you are considering vinyl plank flooring and you want a rigid hardwood feeling, you should go for 10 mils or above. Also, consider the thickness of the wear layer; this product is layered and at the very top is a clear melamine wear sheet. This is what protects the floor from scratches and scuffs and keeps spills at the surface. Wear layers are measured in mils and come in 6, 12, and 20. For heavily trafficked residential rooms, select a 20.

Examine the image

The image layer is what gives this product a high-end style. Images are taken with 3D photography and are remarkably clear and vibrant. You will see knots, raised grains, wormholes, swirls, and veining variations. Colors will pop.

Don't be fooled by those ultra inexpensive, bargain-basement prices. Corners will be cut somewhere! If the image looks dull or faded, the product could be of lesser quality. That is something you should discuss with your flooring pro.

What is LVF?

If you're not already familiar, ask to see samples. This material is an amazingly realistic mimic of wood, tile, or stone and is available in a large assortment of colors and patterns. Embossing adds depth and dimension. Textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed are available. It follows all the trends, so you can get anything from gray or whitewashed floors to a marble look and tiles with metallic hues and pattern play.

The best design option is they can be cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards or square, groutable tile-sized pieces are known as LVT flooring. It’s easy to care for and uncomplicated to install. The technique is a floating floor, which is a click and lock/loose lay system.
